Harmony Baby Formula Changes as Your Baby Grows

As infants grow, their mothers’ breast milk changes in composition to suit the infant’s changing nutritional needs. Current infant formulas take a “one size fits all” approach and remain the same for the first 12 months of a baby’s life. Seeing how much they grow in that time, it is crazy to think that infants’ nutritional needs remain the same throughout all stages of their growth. Harmony Baby Formula mirrors the changes seen in breast milk so parents can have an alternative they know delivers the proper nutrition to their baby, customized to the stage of life they are in.

One of the biggest areas of change in breast milk is the protein content. There are two types of proteins in milk; whey proteins and casein proteins. When a baby is first born, the protein in the colostrum their mom produces is about 80% whey proteins and 20% casein proteins. As the baby grows older, the maturing breast milk actually shifts its protein ratio to about 50/50. With its human breast milk proteins, Harmony emulates this change.

Cow’s milk serves as the nutritional basis for almost all infant formulas, and it’s protein ratio and content is far different from that of breast milk. The protein ratio of cow’s milk is the inverse of human colostrum: about 20% whey and 80% casein. Since regulations only allow for the use of mature cow’s milk, the protein ratio of the milk used in current formulas does not change.

Current formulas try to make up for the differences in cow’s milk by adding more whey proteins in to make the protein ratio a little closer to that of mature human breast milk. This is good, but they still maintain the same formulation throughout all stages of an infant’s life. By producing human whey and casein proteins, Harmony will customize the protein content based on the baby’s age, and mirror the proteins that they would receive from breast milk at each stage of life.
