Protein Farming: Our Technology at a Glance

At Harmony, we believe technology is the way forward to creating the most natural alternatives to breast milk. We use a technology called protein farming, also known as precision fermentation, to harvest human breast milk proteins that serve as the basis for our infant formula, delivering the nutrition that nature has built for babies. Protein is an incredibly important nutrient for proper infant growth and development and breast milk proteins are the best ones for an infant to consume.

Although protein farming is relatively new to the foodspace, it is actually very mature, well-known, and safe technology. It has been used for more than 30 years in the medical industry, producing well known medicines like insulin and various vitamins. Here is how it works:

Step 1: We start by selecting and designing specific microflora to produce proteins that are 100% bioidentical to the proteins found in human breast milk. Once the microflora are making the proper proteins, we optimize them to produce protein as efficiently as possible.

Step 2: Once the microflora are efficiently producing the breast milk proteins, we put them into a bioreactor to help that production process even more and generate large amounts of protein.

Step 3: Once there is a satisfactory amount of protein in the bioreactor, we then use a pharmaceutical-grade ultra filtration system to perfectly separate the breast milk proteins and the microflora.

Step 4: Once the proteins and microflora are separated, we leave the microflora in the bioreactor to continue producing proteins. We take the filtered proteins, which are non-GMO, hypoallergenic, and 100% bioidentical to those found in human breast milk, and use them as the nutritional basis for Harmony Baby Formula.
