At Harmony, we believe technology is the way forward to creating the most natural alternatives to breast milk. We use a technology called protein farming to harvest human breast milk components that serve as the basis for our infant formula, delivering the nutrition that nature has built for babies. 

As with all parents, our #1 priority is the safety of infants. We make sure that every component we grow is 100% identical to those found in breast milk, so every ingredient that comes out of our lab is one that could come from a breast. We chose our technology because it has a proven track record of safety, and while we are one of the first applying it to the baby nutrition industry, it has been used in the medical industry for over 30 years. Harmony only settles for the best, and our team is filled with top industry experts both on the technological side and the infant nutrition side to ensure that we are providing top nutrition that is completely safe (check out our “Meet Us” page to learn more about the team). 

Harmony is always working to provide a formula that more closely matches breast milk. Every time we are able to grow a component that is bioidentical to its breast milk counterpart, we move on to the next. With labs in New York, Ireland, Brazil and soon Hong Kong, we are working around the globe to make a human based breast milk alternative a reality.

Protein Farming

Harmony uses a mature and safe technology, known as protein farming, to produce human breast milk components.

Protein farming, also known as recombinant proteins or precision fermentation, is the process Harmony uses to grow our human breast milk components. It starts by selecting and designing special microflora that can produce proteins that perfectly match the proteins found in human breast milk. From there, we optimize the microflora to produce the proteins very efficiently, and then put them in our fermenter to produce a very large volume. Once enough proteins are produced, we use a pharmaceutical-grade microbial filtration system to perfectly separate the human breast milk proteins from the microflora. We let the microbes continue their production process while we take the pure human breast milk proteins and use them as the nutritional basis for Harmony Baby Formula. 

Although this technology is relatively new to the foodspace, it is actually very mature, well-known, and safe. It has been used for more than 30 years in the medical industry, producing well known medicines like insulin and various vitamins. We have gathered the top protein farming experts to ensure that our scientific process safely and efficiently produces proteins that perfectly match those in human breast milk.

GMO Free, Of Course

Nature designed breast milk to be perfect for our babies, so there is no reason to modify it.

Harmony does not support giving GMOs to our babies. We are trying to push infant formula closer to the golden standard of nutrition, which is breast milk. Including GMOs would only take us further from our natural target. None of the microflora we use end up in Harmony Baby Formula and the proteins they produce are not GMO, as they are 100% identical to proteins found in human breast milk.

Think of the microflora as the factory that produces the proteins. Although the factory is used to make the end product, no parts of the factory are actually included in the product, and that product is exactly the same as what is found in nature.
